University of California
UC PIQ Grader
UC applicants answer four of eight personal insight questions in 350 words each. The reader is looking for a direct answer, concrete evidence and a clear change in understanding — not a shorter version of your Common App essay.
- A direct answer to the exact PIQ prompt
- Specific examples and actions rather than adjectives
- What you learned and how it changes what you will do at UC

What a UC reader is looking for
- A direct answer to the exact PIQ question in the first few sentences
- Specific actions, responsibilities and outcomes, not adjectives
- What you learned and how it changes what you will do next
- A response that does not repeat another PIQ or the activities list

How the UC PIQ rubric changes
Specificity and reflection carry 20 points each, and character and perspective carries 20. Storytelling drops to 10 because a 350-word response rarely has room for a full narrative arc — the answer and the evidence matter more.
Common PIQ mistakes
- Spending the first paragraph on setup instead of answering the question
- Describing a group project without explaining your specific role
- Ending with a lesson that the response has not demonstrated
- Repeating the same story or trait across multiple PIQs
UC PIQ Grader: questions
How many UC PIQs do I need?+
UC applicants answer four of the eight personal insight questions. Each response has a 350-word limit. This grader scores one response at a time.
Should each PIQ tell a different story?+
Yes, as far as possible. The four responses together should cover different parts of you. Repeating the same anecdote or the same leadership claim wastes the space.
Is the UC PIQ the same as a personal statement?+
No. PIQs are short, direct answers to specific questions. The 650-word Common App essay has room for a full narrative; a 350-word PIQ needs the answer first.
Does this grader know the official UC prompts?+
It uses the prompt text you paste. The summaries above are for orientation only. Confirm the exact current wording on the UC admissions website before you submit.
